Oops!...I Did it Again!

I just returned from Southern California where VHMA hosted a productive Management Exchange. I was pleased to see so many managers participating in the event, sharing information and supporting their colleagues and the association.

“Triumphs and Blunders,” one of the Exchange’s most popular sessions, shined the spotlight on members who candidly discussed and evaluated their responses to management incidents. They shared the good, the bad and the ugly so that others could learn from their experiences. For me, it was an opportunity to focus on the lessons learned from a management lapse that culminated in a social media nightmare.

The blunder, which I refer to as "Oops! I Did It Again,” underscores the importance of delegation.  In a nut shell, I assigned social media responsibility to a staff member but neglected to provide oversight to ensure that the task was being handled appropriately. The social media coordinator was ill-prepared and the lack of preparedness precipitated a crisis.

In the midst of the debacle, I was reminded of a lesson I knew all too well: Delegation is not a one and done activity. There must be training, follow-up and regular oversight, without them delegating and forgetting is a recipe for disaster!

I hope that sharing my story helps other managers avoid the same mistake.

But for now, whenever I hear Britney Spears’ “Oops!... I Did It Again,” I am reminded of my slipup.
