Prioritize to Achieve Goals

Managing a veterinary practice can be a daunting and a lonely task. So many aspects of the practice's management deserve your full attention yet urgent daily matters arise that require your immediate attention. So what is a manager to do? How does a manager juggle it all? Is there a magic formula or recipe you can follow to ensure success with limited time and resources?

Unfortunately there is no magic bullet. For me I find that I need to continuingly remind and refocus myself on the ultimate task at hand - the mission of the practice. Why we do what we do! For our practice the ultimate goal is to create a profitable business focused on providing quality pet care services where employees find job satisfaction. So while I may not have gotten to everything on my "to do" list as I planned, I need to ensure that everything I do spend my time on is working toward the end game. Evaluating the value of my daily tasks as it relates to the practice's goal is critical to making sure I stay on track. Tasks that contribute significantly toward the goal, which are jobs only I can do, are high value tasks which deserve my attention. Tasks that have little impact on reaching the goal and/or are jobs that other staff members can manage are considered low value and should be reconsidered. It is not easy; it requires a significant effort in self-discipline and the ability to honestly evaluate not only my time value, but also the value and impact of the task to the practice. There are times when I fail and spend too much time on details that have little impact. As you can imagine, I can argue that everything we do has value.... no detail is insignificant.  Unfortunately however - limited time and resources dictate that we prioritize in order to achieve our goals.
