What will you choose to make time for?

Fellow VHMAers!

It is with great enthusiasm and humility that I assume the role of VHMA President. Among the many responsibilities of this position is the opportunity to reach out to our membership with a monthly President’s message. I hope to share some perspective about our incredible profession, provoke thought and new ideas and perhaps bring a little humor.

I began thinking about how to connect with each of you in a meaningful way. ‘What can I say that would provoke thought, be entertaining and encourage the membership to read?’ It was about then that writers block set in and my virtual trash can filled with uninspired drafts. I started thinking perhaps I have nothing interesting to say. After all, Dash Nash, my overly friendly border collie, is the only one who listens to everything I have to say with that much intensity.

The answer came to me at the Annual Conference in NOLA as I was contemplating all that it meant to assume this new role. Then I realized: ‘I only have two years!’ Two years to maintain and grow the momentum we have created in our association. Two years to give back for all I have learned. Two years to contribute to a group of incredible people to whom I owe so much. The friendships and comradery. The advice and direction. The support and helping hand. The encouragement and faith.

‘That’s not enough TIME!’ It hit me like an MMA fighter in the final round.

Time, that most precious of commodities, is finite. Each moment is a choice for how to use this limited resource. I felt a sudden urge to get started, there was no time to waste. I had an immediate clarity and focus. I am certain we have each felt this way at one point or another. In the moment I didn’t consider how I would find the time for all I wanted to do in an already overcommitted schedule. There was a sense of purpose that required I make the time.

With my new understanding, the message I needed to make became obvious and the words flowed like Ralphie’s Red Ryder theme. I am encouraging each of you to make time. Choose to make time for something that has an impact. An impact at your practice. An impact in your community. An impact in your family. An impact for our association and industry. An impact for the patients we care for. I believe the rewards will be far greater than the investment!

So, I am choosing to make time for the VHMA. To make an impact and attempt to repay all I have received from each of you. To honor the trust you have placed in me to lead our association. I hope that you choose to make time to click through and read this message each month. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my thoughts and welcome your feedback and input.

What will you choose to make time for?
